AdSense for YouTube: The Complete Creator Guide (Setup, Payments, Verification & Tax)
Everything between 'monetization approved' and money in your bank: linking AdSense, the monthly payment cycle, verification, tax forms, holds and account health.

Getting accepted into the YouTube Partner Program does not put money in your bank account. That happens through AdSense for YouTube, a separate Google account with its own approval, payment cycle, verification checks and tax forms. Most "YouTube didn't pay me" problems trace back to one of five steps in that chain. This guide walks through all five in order, with the exact rule at each step and a link to the detailed fix.
The five steps that decide whether you get paid:
- Link an approved AdSense for YouTube account to your channel.
- Let earnings finalize and reach the payment threshold.
- Add a payment method that works in your country.
- Pass identity, address (PIN) and, for some methods, bank verification.
- Submit tax info and keep the account in good standing.
What is AdSense for YouTube?
AdSense for YouTube is the payments account YouTube uses to pay Partner Program earnings: ad revenue, YouTube Premium revenue and fan-funding features. It is managed from YouTube Studio rather than from the main AdSense website, and creating it anywhere else is a common mistake. Google's help pages tell creators not to sign up at adsense.com when asked for a website URL, because the YouTube account has to be created from inside YouTube Studio.
Three rules shape everything else:
- One account per payee. You can only have one AdSense or AdSense for YouTube account under the same payee name. A duplicate gets disapproved and monetization is switched off for the channel attached to it.
- One account can pay several channels. You can monetize more than one YouTube channel with the same AdSense for YouTube account.
- YouTube earnings are paid separately. If you also earn from website AdSense, the two payments accounts each have to reach the payment threshold on their own.
Is AdSense for YouTube the same as Google AdSense?
They are related, but they are not the same account. Website AdSense pays publishers for ads on their sites. AdSense for YouTube pays creators for YouTube earnings, with its own balance, payment method, verification and tax form. If you already have website AdSense, you can sign in with that same Google account when you link, but your YouTube money still lands in the separate YouTube payments account.
| Question | Website AdSense | AdSense for YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| What pays into it | Ads shown on your website or blog | YouTube Partner Program earnings |
| Where you sign up | adsense.com, with a site URL | YouTube Studio > Earn (no website needed) |
| Payment threshold | Its own balance and threshold | Its own, separate balance and threshold |
| Tax info | Managed in that payments account | Managed in the YouTube payments account |
| Can the same person have both? | Yes, under the same Google sign-in | Yes, but YouTube earnings stay in the separate YouTube balance |
The most expensive misunderstanding here is expecting a combined total to trigger payment. $70 of website earnings plus $60 of YouTube earnings is not a $130 payout. Neither account has reached the threshold.
Step 1: Linking AdSense to your channel
You link AdSense from YouTube Studio > Earn, using the "Sign up for AdSense for YouTube" card. You can link an existing approved account, which usually takes a few minutes, or create a new one, which usually takes several days and can take two to three weeks. Approval arrives by email, and the card in YouTube Studio then shows the account as active. It can take up to 24 hours for the link to appear everywhere.
Two situations trip people up:
- Creators under 18. The minimum age for AdSense for YouTube is 18. Younger creators can only monetize by linking to a parent or guardian's approved AdSense for YouTube account.
- "You already have an AdSense account." Because of the one-account-per-payee rule, a second application gets disapproved. Link the older account instead, or close it before the new one is approved.
Our step-by-step guide to linking AdSense to YouTube covers every screen, the approval wait and each error message.
If the channel is already linked and you need a different account, YouTube lets you change it once every 32 days. See how to change or share your AdSense for YouTube account. Moving countries is a different process with bigger consequences for your payment history, covered in changing your AdSense country for YouTube.
Step 2: The monthly payment cycle
YouTube pays monthly, roughly three weeks after the month ends. The figures you watch in YouTube Studio during the month are estimates. The payable amount is set after the month closes.
| Date | What happens | What you need to do |
|---|---|---|
| During the month | Estimated earnings accrue in YouTube Studio | Nothing. Treat the figures as estimates. |
| 7th–12th of next month | Finalized earnings are added to your YouTube payments balance | Check the balance in AdSense for YouTube. |
| By the 20th | Balance must meet the threshold; payment changes and hold removals must be done | Fix any hold before this date, or wait another month. |
| 21st–26th | Payment is issued | Watch for "Payment issued" on the Payments page. |
| After issue | Money travels to your bank | Up to 7 business days for EFT; up to 15 for wire transfer. |
If your balance is below the threshold on the 20th, or there is a hold, you are not paid that month and the balance rolls over. In the US the threshold is $100; other currencies have their own amounts. The full calendar, thresholds and rollover examples are in our YouTube AdSense payment schedule guide.
Why is my AdSense balance lower than YouTube Studio?
Estimated earnings stay open to adjustment until they are finalized. Google lists US tax withholding, local taxes, invalid traffic, copyright claims and disputes, and certain campaign types as reasons the finalized figure can be lower. Date ranges also differ between the two dashboards. We break down each cause, and how to reconcile the two numbers for one month, in why AdSense finalized earnings don't match YouTube Studio.
Step 3: Choosing a payment method
You can only pick a payment method after your earnings pass the payment method selection threshold, and the methods offered depend on the country in your payment address.
| Method | Typical availability | Verification | Arrival after issue |
|---|---|---|---|
| EFT (bank transfer) | Many countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Japan | Bank details, sometimes a test deposit | Up to 7 business days |
| SEPA | EEA countries where offered | Bank details | Bank-dependent |
| Wire transfer | Many countries, including India, Pakistan, UK, Germany | No test deposit needed | Up to 15 business days |
| PayPal Hyperwallet | Selected countries in the Americas, including the US | New Hyperwallet account and activation | Then cash out to your bank |
| Check | A few countries only | Mailing address | 2–4 weeks by mail |
Your bank or branch must be in the same country as your payment address, or the SWIFT code will be rejected. Our AdSense for YouTube payment methods comparison shows how to choose, how to set up Hyperwallet and how to fix rejected bank details.
Step 4: Verification checks
Google verifies that you are a real person at a real address before it pays you. Depending on your account, you may see three different checks.
| Check | When it appears | Deadline or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Identity verification | When earnings reach a threshold, or when Google requests it | PIN is not mailed until identity is verified |
| Address PIN | Mailed to your payment address, usually arriving in 3–4 weeks | 4 months to enter it; 3 wrong entries demonetize the channel |
| Bank test deposit | When you add certain bank accounts | 3 attempts to enter the amount |
Step-by-step fixes for each check:
- Documents rejected or the identity check stuck: AdSense identity verification failed
- The letter never arrived, or you're out of attempts: AdSense PIN not received
- The small deposit is missing or won't match: AdSense test deposit
What happens if I never verify my address?
If the address isn't verified within four months of the PIN being generated, monetization is paused until it is. During a pause the channel stays in the Partner Program but earns nothing, and that time is not paid back later.
Step 5: Tax info and account health
Do I have to submit tax info if I don't live in the US?
Yes. Every monetizing creator must submit US tax info in AdSense for YouTube, wherever they live, by December 10 each year. Without it, Google can withhold up to 24% of your total worldwide YouTube earnings. With an approved form, non-US creators are withheld only on earnings from US viewers, at 30% or a lower treaty rate.

Payment holds
A hold stops payment even when your balance is above the threshold. The Payments page in AdSense for YouTube shows an alert explaining the reason.
| Hold type | Usual cause | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Tax | No tax info, or the form is no longer approved | Submit or fix the tax form |
| Identity | Identity or address not verified | Upload documents or enter the PIN |
| Payments | No payment method, or a self-hold you set | Add a method or remove the self-hold |
| Compliance | Google Payments needs to confirm your details | Reply within 5 business days |
| Protection | Payouts withheld during an account review | Usually nothing; holds can last up to 35 days |
Every hold type, the 20th-of-month cutoff and "issued but not received" problems are covered in AdSense for YouTube payment on hold.
Invalid traffic and disabled accounts
Invalid traffic is any activity that doesn't come from a real viewer with genuine interest, such as purchased views or asking viewers to click ads. YouTube can temporarily limit ads on the channel, delay payments for up to 90 days during an investigation, and in serious cases disable the AdSense for YouTube account.
- Ads limited on your channel: YouTube invalid traffic ad limit.
- Monetization paused, or the account disabled: paused vs disabled AdSense for YouTube.
How long does it take to get your first YouTube payment?
Assume about two months from your first monetized day, and longer if verification is slow:
- Earnings from your first month finalize between the 7th and 12th of the next month.
- If the balance is over the threshold by the 20th, with no holds, payment is issued between the 21st and 26th.
- The money then takes up to 7 business days (EFT) or 15 (wire) to arrive.
Smaller channels often need several months to reach the $100 threshold. To estimate when you will get there, try our YouTube earnings calculator.
Example: a first payment, date by date
Illustrative timeline for a US creator using EFT. Your dates shift with weekends, holidays and verification.
| Date | What happens | Balance |
|---|---|---|
| March 10 | AdSense for YouTube linked; monetization starts | $0 |
| March 31 | Month ends; Studio estimates $142 | Estimated only |
| ~April 1 | PIN letter mailed (the balance passed the verification threshold) | n/a |
| April 7–12 | March earnings finalized at $136 after adjustments | $136 |
| April 15 | Tax info approved; EFT bank account added and verified | $136 |
| April 20 | Threshold check: $136 ≥ $100, but the PIN hasn't been entered, so payment is held | $136 rolls over |
| April 28 | PIN arrives and is entered | n/a |
| May 7–12 | April earnings ($118) finalized | $254 |
| May 20 | Threshold met, no holds | $254 |
| May 21–26 | Payment issued | n/a |
| By early June | Money arrives by EFT (up to 7 business days) | n/a |
The creator earned enough in March but was paid in late May. The delay came from verification, not from earnings. The fix is to enter the PIN, submit tax info and add a payment method as soon as each is requested, not when the first payment is due.
Why creators don't get paid: symptoms and fixes

How much does AdSense for YouTube pay?
AdSense for YouTube doesn't set a rate. It pays out whatever your channel earned, minus adjustments. What a channel earns per 1,000 views (RPM) depends on niche, audience country, video length, ad placement and season. Rates vary so widely that an "average" says little about your own channel.
- How RPM differs from the CPM advertisers pay: YouTube RPM vs CPM
- Why niche benchmarks are unreliable: YouTube RPM by niche
- Mid-roll placement and its effect on RPM: mid-roll ad strategy

Your actual RPM is in YouTube Studio > Analytics > Revenue. Use that rather than any published average.
A monthly AdSense routine that prevents payment problems
Five minutes a month removes most surprises:
| Day | Check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1st–6th | Studio revenue for last month, set to the calendar month | Spot unusual drops or spikes early |
| 7th–12th | AdSense balance after finalization; Studio payment activity adjustments | Confirm what will actually be paid |
| By the 15th | Payments page for any alert (tax, PIN, identity, method) | Leaves time to fix before the cutoff |
| By the 20th | Any bank or method change completed | Changes after the 20th wait a month |
| 21st–26th | "Payment issued" status | Confirms the run went through |
| Once a year, before December 10 | Tax info still Approved and not near expiry | Avoids up to 24% withholding |
FAQ
Does YouTube pay weekly?
No. AdSense for YouTube pays monthly. A month's earnings are finalized between the 7th and 12th of the next month and issued between the 21st and 26th, provided your balance meets the threshold on the 20th and there are no holds.
Can I pause my YouTube payments?
Yes. You can set a self-hold, for example while changing banks, and your balance keeps building. Remember to remove it before the 20th of the month you want to be paid. A forgotten self-hold is one of the payment hold types listed above.
Do I still owe tax in my own country?
Usually, yes. US withholding on earnings from US viewers is a US matter. It doesn't replace the tax rules of the country where you live, and some countries also apply local taxes that show up as adjustments. Check your local obligations with a tax professional, and keep your AdSense payment history as your income record.
What happens if I lose access to the Google account that owns AdSense?
Payments keep going to the method on file, but you can't fix holds, update tax info or change bank details without access. Secure that Google account with 2-step verification and up-to-date recovery options, the same way you protect the channel itself.
