YouTube 1099 Form: How US Creators Report AdSense Income
US creators get Form 1099-MISC for YouTube earnings, typically by early March. Where to find it in AdSense, what it covers, and why you report income with or without it.

If you're a US creator paid through AdSense for YouTube, Google reports your earnings to the IRS on Form 1099-MISC, and YouTube says these are typically issued by early March for the previous year. Your obligation doesn't depend on the form, though. You must report all your YouTube income whether or not a 1099 arrives.
This guide covers the form, where to download it, and the mistakes that make tax season harder. It is not tax advice. A tax professional should confirm how the income goes on your return.
Does YouTube send a 1099?
Yes, to US creators who receive eligible payments. The form comes from Google (which pays you through AdSense for YouTube), not from YouTube as a separate company. For it to be accurate, you need an approved Form W-9 in AdSense for YouTube. That's the US tax form every US monetizing creator has to submit. If yours isn't approved, fix that first: how to submit YouTube tax info in AdSense.
Which 1099 form does YouTube use?
You'll see three 1099 types mentioned online for creators. They aren't interchangeable:
| Form | What it reports | Applies to YouTube AdSense income? |
|---|---|---|
| 1099-MISC | Miscellaneous income, including royalties | Yes. YouTube Help names 1099-MISC for US creators. |
| 1099-NEC | Nonemployee compensation for services | Some blogs claim this. YouTube's own help page names 1099-MISC. |
| 1099-K | Payments through payment processors or platforms | Can apply to some creator payouts through processors. Check which forms appear in your tax section. |
The one to trust is the form that actually appears in your AdSense for YouTube tax section. Online guides disagree on form types and reporting thresholds, and thresholds have changed in recent tax years. Your tax professional should confirm what applies to your figures.
When does YouTube send 1099 forms?
| Document | Who gets it | When |
|---|---|---|
| Form 1099-MISC | US creators with eligible payments | Typically by early March |
| Year-end tax forms (all creators) | Creators who submitted tax info and had eligible payments | On or before April 14 |
| Form 1042-S | Non-US creators with US withholding | With the year-end forms |
If early March passes and nothing has arrived, check your delivery preference and download the form yourself (below) before assuming it wasn't issued.
How to download your 1099 from AdSense for YouTube
- Sign in to AdSense for YouTube.
- Go to Payments, then Payments info, then Manage settings.
- Open the United States tax info section, where the tax tool lives.
- Find your year-end tax forms and download the one for the tax year you're filing.
- Check the payee name and TIN match your W-9. If they don't, correct the W-9 and contact support about the issued form.
You can also manage how tax documents are delivered (electronically or by mail) in the same tax settings.
Didn't get a 1099? You still report the income
A missing form doesn't mean the income is tax-free. Common reasons there's no form:
- Your payments for the year were below the form's reporting threshold.
- Your W-9 wasn't on file or approved.
- Delivery was set to mail, or the form is in AdSense but you haven't downloaded it.
In every case, report your actual YouTube earnings. Your AdSense for YouTube payment history is the record to work from. It shows each payment issued during the year. Totals there may differ from YouTube Studio estimates, because estimated earnings are adjusted before they're finalized. See why AdSense finalized earnings don't match YouTube Studio.
How do I report YouTube income on my taxes?
Exactly where the income goes on your return depends on your situation (hobby or business, sole proprietor or company). That's the part a tax professional should confirm. What you bring them is the same either way:
| Record | Where to get it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Form 1099-MISC | AdSense for YouTube tax settings | What Google reported to the IRS |
| Payment history for the calendar year | AdSense for YouTube > Payments | What you were actually paid, payment by payment |
| Revenue reports | YouTube Studio > Analytics > Revenue | Breakdown by source (ads, Premium, memberships) |
| Income from other platforms | Sponsors, affiliate programs, other 1099s | YouTube AdSense is rarely your only creator income |
| Business expenses | Receipts, invoices, subscriptions | Equipment, editing and software costs can offset income if you file as a business |
Download the AdSense payment history every month or quarter rather than once a year. It's much easier to reconcile with your bank statements as you go.
US tax calendar for YouTube creators
| Date | What to do |
|---|---|
| By December 10 | Make sure your W-9 shows Approved in AdSense for YouTube |
| January | Gather payment history and expense records for the year |
| By early March | Download your Form 1099-MISC from AdSense for YouTube |
| By the IRS filing deadline (usually mid-April) | File your return, or ask your tax professional about an extension |
| During the year | Ask your tax professional whether you need quarterly estimated tax payments |
Mistakes that cause 1099 problems
| Mistake | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No approved W-9 | Backup withholding of up to 24% of worldwide earnings, and inaccurate reporting | Submit the W-9 before December 10 |
| Name on W-9 differs from payee name | Form may not match IRS records | Use exactly the name on your payments profile |
| Reporting Studio estimates instead of payments | Income over- or under-stated | Use finalized AdSense payment history |
| Ignoring income without a form | Under-reported income | Report all YouTube income regardless |
FAQ
Is YouTube income self-employment income?
For many individual creators, the IRS treats ongoing YouTube income as business income, which can bring self-employment tax as well as income tax. Whether that applies to you depends on how you operate. It's the first question to settle with your tax professional.
Do I get a 1099 if I earned only a little?
Not necessarily, because forms have reporting thresholds. The income is still taxable and still has to be reported, using your AdSense payment history.
US creators vs non-US creators
US creators deal with the W-9 and 1099. Non-US creators submit a W-8BEN (individuals) or W-8BEN-E (businesses), may receive Form 1042-S for any US withholding, and can claim treaty rates. That process is explained in our Form W-8BEN guide for YouTube creators.
