Required Daily Pace (Adding + Offsetting Expirations)
Because hours gained 12 months ago continually drop off, to cross 4,000 hours you must add enough to cover daily expirations (6.8 hrs/day) plus the remaining deficit:

Scenario Estimator: Watch Hours from Views & Average Duration
Calculate how many watch hours your prospective video releases will yield based on expected view volume and average view duration (AVD):
Formula: (Views × Average View Duration in minutes) ÷ 60. Note: Only public watch time from long-form content counts toward the 4,000-hour YPP threshold.
How the Rolling 365-Day Window Works
Under YouTube Partner Program (YPP) guidelines, eligibility for ad revenue sharing requires accumulating 4,000 valid public watch hours within the past 12 months (365 consecutive days). This is not a calendar year metric (January to December), but a moving temporal window:
When a channel publishes a viral video that accumulates hundreds of watch hours in a single week, those hours remain active inside the monetization window for exactly 365 days. On day 366, they begin expiring on a day-by-day basis. If your current daily production pace cannot match the watch hours expiring from that spike, your total hours on the Studio Earn tab will decline even while publishing new videos.
Valid Public Watch Hours vs. Total Studio Watch Time
Creators frequently observe a discrepancy between the watch time displayed in YouTube Studio Analytics and the hours shown on the Earn tab. This discrepancy occurs because the Earn tab enforces strict eligibility exclusions:
| Traffic / Video Format | Studio Analytics | YPP Earn Tab (4,000 Hours) | Official Rule / Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public Long-Form Videos | Included | Included | Counts toward 4,000 hrs within rolling 365 days |
| YouTube Shorts | Included | Excluded | Requires 10M Shorts views in 90 days instead |
| Unlisted or Private Videos | Included | Excluded | Must be public at time of eligibility review |
| Deleted Videos | Historical total only | Excluded | Watch hours deleted immediately upon removal |
| Google Ads Video Campaigns | Included | Excluded | Paid views do not count toward organic 4,000 hrs |

How to Build Sustainable Public Watch Time
Audit Audience Retention Drop-Offs
In YouTube Studio, inspect the retention curve of your top 5 videos. A 10-minute video with 50% average view duration yields 5 minutes per view, meaning just 48,000 views reaches 4,000 hours.
Organize Content into Playlists
Auto-playing series and topical playlists convert single-video viewers into continuous multi-video study sessions, multiplying watch time without requiring proportional impression increases.
Focus on Search-Driven Evergreen Topics
Videos answering high-intent tutorial queries provide consistent daily watch hours for months or years, offsetting sharp expiration cliffs from older viral spikes.
Track Net Daily Watch Hours, Not Gross
Always subtract your daily expiring hours from your daily additions. Gross gains can conceal net losses if a major video from 12 months ago is falling off your rolling window.
FAQ
Why do my YouTube watch hours drop on the Earn tab?
The YouTube Partner Program 4,000-hour requirement operates on a rolling 365-day window. Each day, watch hours accrued exactly 366 days ago drop off your eligibility total. If you earned 20 hours on this day last year but only earned 12 hours today, your total rolling watch hours drop by 8 hours.
Do YouTube Shorts views count toward the 4,000 watch hours?
No. YouTube policy explicitly excludes Shorts views from the 4,000 public watch hours requirement. For Shorts creators, YPP eligibility requires 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days alongside 1,000 subscribers.
Which video watch hours are excluded from YPP eligibility?
YouTube excludes watch hours from private videos, unlisted videos, deleted videos, ad campaigns (Google Ads video views), live streams not converted to VOD, and Shorts feed views. Only public, active long-form videos generate valid public watch hours.
How is the required daily pace calculated?
Required Daily Pace = (Target Hours − Current Hours) ÷ Days + Daily Expiring Hours. If you need 1,500 hours over 90 days and lose 5 hours per day to expirations, you must generate 16.7 + 5.0 = 21.7 gross watch hours per day.
Are my analytics or channel statistics uploaded to your servers?
No. All calculations and CSV exports run 100% locally in your web browser. No analytics data, view counts, or channel inputs are transmitted or stored.
