How to Submit YouTube Tax Info in AdSense: Deadline, Forms & Treaty Claims
Without approved tax info, Google can withhold up to 24% of your worldwide YouTube earnings. Here is the exact AdSense path, which form to pick, and how to claim a treaty rate.

If your AdSense for YouTube account has no approved US tax form, Google can withhold up to 24% of your total worldwide YouTube earnings, not just the money from US viewers. Submitting a valid form, and claiming a treaty benefit if you qualify, usually cuts that to a share of your US-viewer earnings only, often far less.
Google's deadline for the current year is December 10. The requirement applies to every monetizing creator, whether or not you live in the US.
Before you start: have your legal name exactly as it appears on your payee profile, your permanent address, and your tax identification number (TIN) ready. Fill the form in Latin characters only, because the IRS cannot process anything else.
What happens if you don't submit YouTube tax info?
The rate depends on two things: whether an approved form is on file, and whether you are a US or non-US payee.
| Your situation | Withholding Google applies | Which earnings it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| No tax info, individual (any country) | Up to 24% backup withholding | Total worldwide YouTube earnings |
| No tax info, US business | Up to 24% backup withholding | Total worldwide YouTube earnings |
| No tax info, non-US business | 30% default rate | Earnings from US viewers |
| Non-US, form approved, no treaty claimed | 30% | Earnings from US viewers only |
| Non-US, form approved, treaty claimed | 0–30%, set by your country's treaty | Earnings from US viewers only |
| US creator, approved W-9 with valid TIN | No backup withholding | Reported to you on Form 1099-MISC |
The middle rows are the ones that surprise non-US creators. A creator with 20% US viewers and no form on file loses up to 24% of everything. With an approved form and no treaty, they lose 30% of that 20%, which is about 6% of total earnings. A treaty can lower it further.
Which tax form should you choose?
The AdSense tax tool asks a short series of questions and picks the form for you, but it helps to know where you will land before you start.
| You are | Form the tool will give you |
|---|---|
| US citizen or resident individual | W-9 |
| US business (LLC, corporation) | W-9 |
| Non-US individual | W-8BEN |
| Non-US business or entity | W-8BEN-E |
Choose Individual or Business to match the name on your AdSense payee profile. If you set up AdSense under your personal name, file as an individual even if you think of your channel as a business, because the form has to describe the same payee that Google pays. For a walkthrough of each W-8BEN field and treaty article, see our Form W-8BEN guide for YouTube creators.
How to submit tax info in AdSense for YouTube
- Sign in to AdSense for YouTube with the Google account linked to your channel.
- Click Payments, then Payments info.
- Click Manage settings.
- Scroll to Payments profile, click the edit icon next to United States tax info, then select Manage tax info.
- Answer the questionnaire (individual or business, US person or not). The tool selects the form.
- Enter your name, address and TIN exactly as they appear on your tax records, using Latin characters only.
- If you are a non-US creator, complete the treaty section (next heading) before you sign.
- Sign electronically and submit.
If you manage more than one payments account (for example a website AdSense account and an AdSense for YouTube account), make sure you are in the AdSense for YouTube account before editing. Your YouTube earnings are paid from that account.
How do I claim tax treaty benefits on YouTube?
A treaty claim lowers the 30% rate on US-viewer earnings if your country of residence has an income tax treaty with the US. Google cannot tell you whether you qualify, so confirm eligibility with a tax adviser first.
When you claim:
- Select every eligible income type. Google lists two: Other Copyright Royalties (YouTube Partner Program and Google Play earnings) and Services (Google AdSense). Missing one leaves that income at the full rate.
- Provide a TIN. A foreign TIN from your country, or a US TIN, is required to claim a treaty benefit.
- Check the rate the form shows after you select your country and income types. Treaty rates differ by country and by income type, so don't assume a rate another creator quoted.
How do I know my tax info was approved?
Go back to Payments > Payments info > Manage settings and look at United States tax info. The status should be a green Approved.
Anything else, including a status that stays under review, means withholding can still apply at the default rate. Fix it before December 10. Start by checking that the name matches your payee profile, that the TIN is entered in the format your country uses, and that every field uses Latin characters.
When do YouTube tax forms expire?
Tax forms expire at the end of the third full calendar year after the year you sign them.
| Year you signed | Form expires |
|---|---|
| 2024 | December 31, 2027 |
| 2025 | December 31, 2028 |
| 2026 | December 31, 2029 |
A form becomes invalid immediately if your circumstances change in a way that affects it. Examples are moving to another country, becoming a US resident, or switching from an individual to a business payee. Resubmit as soon as the change happens rather than waiting for the expiry date.
Can I get back tax that was already withheld?
If you submit or correct your tax info within the same calendar year and by December 10, Google can apply the correct rate to that year's earnings, which may return part of what was over-withheld. Once the year closes, the withholding is reported to the IRS. Recovering it then is a matter between you and the IRS, usually through a US non-resident tax return. That is a job for a tax professional, and the cost often exceeds the refund for smaller channels. This is why the December 10 deadline matters.
What tax documents will YouTube send you?
| Who you are | Document | When |
|---|---|---|
| US creator | Form 1099-MISC (income reported to the IRS) | Typically by early March |
| Non-US creator with withholding | Form 1042-S (amount withheld) | On or before April 14 |
| All creators | Downloadable in AdSense for YouTube | Under Payments > Payments info > Manage settings |
US creators: what the 1099 contains and how to report the income is covered in our YouTube 1099 form guide.
Checklist before December 10
- Status shows a green Approved under United States tax info.
- Name and account type match your AdSense payee profile.
- Non-US creators: both Other Copyright Royalties and Services are selected if your treaty covers them.
- A TIN is entered if you claimed a treaty benefit.
- The form's signing year is no more than three full calendar years old, and nothing about your residency has changed since.
Tax info is one of five things that decide whether AdSense actually pays you. The others (linking, payment method, PIN and identity checks, and account health) are covered in our complete AdSense for YouTube guide.
This guide explains Google's published process. It is not tax advice. Treaty eligibility and rates depend on your circumstances, so confirm them with a qualified tax professional.
