AdSense for YouTube Account Disabled: Paused vs Disabled & How to Appeal
A paused channel can be fixed in a day; a disabled AdSense account usually can't be replaced. How to tell which you have, how to appeal, and what happens to your money.

"Monetization paused" and "AdSense account disabled" are very different problems. A pause usually means no approved AdSense for YouTube account is linked, and you can fix it yourself, often within a day. A disable means Google shut down the AdSense for YouTube account itself, most often for invalid traffic. You can appeal once, but you can't open a replacement account.
Do not create a new AdSense account to get around either one. After a disable for invalid traffic, Google states that creators may not open new accounts.
Paused vs disabled monetization: the difference
| Question | Monetization paused | AdSense for YouTube disabled |
|---|---|---|
| What it means | No active, approved AdSense for YouTube account is linked to the channel | The AdSense for YouTube account itself was shut down |
| Still in the Partner Program? | Yes | Monetization stops for channels tied to that account |
| Ads on your videos | Don't run during the pause | Stop |
| Earnings for the period | None. The paused time isn't paid back. | A final payment for valid revenue may be possible after a 30-day hold |
| How to fix | Link an active, approved account | Appeal through the invalid activity appeal form |
| Can you open a new account? | You can link a different approved account | No, if disabled for invalid traffic |
Why does YouTube pause monetization?
A pause happens when there isn't an active and approved AdSense for YouTube account linked to your channel. Common situations:
- The linked AdSense for YouTube account was closed, disapproved or never finished approval.
- The address on the account isn't verified. Google tells paused creators to confirm the address on file has been verified, and an unentered PIN can pause monetization.
- The account was unlinked or changed, and the new one isn't approved yet.
How to resume monetization after a pause
- In YouTube Studio > Earn, check which AdSense account is linked.
- Link an active, approved AdSense for YouTube account. See changing your linked AdSense account.
- If the account needs address verification, enter the PIN. If it never came, see AdSense PIN not received.
- Monetization resumes once an approved account is linked. Approval is usually within a day or so but can take several days, and a new account needing PIN verification may take 2–4 weeks.
Two side effects to know about. Channel memberships give you 120 days to resume monetization before you lose access to memberships and your members. Copyright claims stay open during the pause.
Why was my AdSense for YouTube account disabled?
Most disables are for invalid traffic: activity that doesn't come from a real user with genuine interest. Google is explicit that it can affect your channel even if you didn't intend it. Typical sources:
| Source | Example |
|---|---|
| Purchased or incentivised views | "View boosting" services, paid traffic exchanges |
| Asking viewers to click ads | "Click an ad to support the channel" |
| Automated traffic | Bots, scripts, embedded autoplay on low-quality sites |
| Unintentional spikes | A third-party promoter using bot traffic without your knowledge |
Before a disable, you may see warning signs: ads limited on the channel, payments delayed for up to 90 days while traffic is investigated, or large invalid-traffic adjustments. If ads are limited but the account still works, act now: YouTube invalid traffic ad limit.
Severe violations of YouTube's monetization policies can also lead to monetization being disabled across your accounts. That's a channel-policy issue, separate from AdSense invalid traffic.
How to appeal an invalid-traffic disable
Submit Google's invalid activity appeal form and include:
- The email address associated with the disabled AdSense for YouTube account.
- The likely cause of the invalid traffic, as specifically as you can (dates, traffic sources, any promotion you paid for).
- What you've changed to stop it happening again. If you bought traffic from a third party, say you've stopped working with them.
- A statement that you, and anyone you're responsible for, didn't directly or indirectly cause the invalid traffic.
Make it count. Google states that after a decision on your appeal, further appeals may not be considered, and reinstatement is not guaranteed. Gather your evidence first: Studio traffic-source reports, receipts or messages from promoters, and the dates of any unusual spikes.
What happens to your earnings after a disable?
- A 30-day payment hold starts when the account is disabled, so Google can calculate any final payment.
- You may get a final payment for revenue that wasn't identified as invalid.
- After the 30 days, sign in to AdSense for YouTube to see any remaining balance.
- Earnings identified as invalid can be withheld or adjusted. Editing, deleting or unlisting videos does not recover them.
If your balance just looks lower than Studio without a disable, the cause is usually ordinary adjustments. See why AdSense finalized earnings don't match YouTube Studio.
How to lower your invalid-traffic risk
Whether you're appealing or just had ads limited, these practices keep your traffic clean. They follow from Google's definition of invalid traffic:
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Grow views through your own content, social posts and collaborations | Buy views, subscribers or "traffic packages" |
| Vet anyone you pay for promotion, and ask how they drive views | Use traffic exchanges or auto-play embed networks |
| Watch Studio traffic sources for sudden unexplained spikes | Ask viewers to click ads, or to watch ads "to support the channel" |
| Keep receipts and messages from promoters | Assume deleting a video removes the problem |
Google also notes that embedding your videos, using the Promotions tab, or placing mid-roll ads does not increase invalid-traffic risk, so you don't need to avoid those.
What should I do while the appeal is pending?
- Don't open another AdSense account or link the channel to someone else's.
- Stop any third-party promotion that could be the source, and keep proof that you did.
- Keep publishing normally. A clean traffic pattern after the incident supports your explanation.
- Watch your email (including spam) for Google's decision.
Is my YouTube channel deleted when AdSense is disabled?
No. A disabled AdSense for YouTube account stops payments and ad earnings through that account. It doesn't delete your channel or videos. The channel can still publish, but it has no way to earn ad revenue through AdSense.
Can you open a new AdSense account after being disabled?
No, not after a disable for invalid traffic. Google says creators disabled for invalid traffic are not allowed any further participation in AdSense and may not open new accounts. A new account would also break the one-account-per-payee rule. Your options are the appeal and, if it fails, a channel that doesn't depend on AdSense revenue.
