AdSense for YouTube Payment on Hold: Every Hold Type and How to Remove It
Your balance is over the threshold but YouTube didn't pay. Find the hold type on your Payments page, apply the matching fix, and beat the 20th-of-month cutoff.

If your balance passed the payment threshold but YouTube didn't pay you, there is almost always a payment hold on your AdSense for YouTube account. The fastest way to find out why is the alert on your Payments page. Click it and it tells you the hold type and the step to clear it.
Do not open a second AdSense account or change your payment country to get around a hold. A duplicate account under your name gets disapproved, and changing country can erase your payment history.
How to find the reason for your payment hold
- Sign in to AdSense for YouTube.
- Open the Payments page.
- Look for the alert near the top. A red alert means a hold is active.
- Click the alert to see the exact reason and the action required.
- If a payment shows as issued but held, check the Transactions page too.
Then match the reason to the table below.
Why is my AdSense payment on hold?
Google groups holds into six categories: tax, identity, payments, compliance, protection, and information requests from banks. Find yours in the table.
| Hold type | What triggered it | How to remove it |
|---|---|---|
| Tax | No US tax info submitted, or the form is no longer approved | Submit tax info and confirm a green "Approved" status |
| Identity: ID not verified | Google asked you to verify your identity | Upload the requested documents under "Verify your identity" |
| Identity: address not verified | The mailed PIN hasn't been entered | Enter the PIN to verify your payment address |
| Payments: no method | No form of payment set up | Add a payment method once you pass the selection threshold |
| Payments: self-hold | You paused payments yourself earlier | Remove the self-hold in payment settings |
| Compliance | Google Payments must verify your personal details | Open the alert in the Google payments center (payments.google.com) or reply to their email within 5 business days |
| Compliance: investigation | Temporary hold during an account investigation | No action. It lifts automatically if your account and traffic are compliant. |
| Protection | Payouts withheld while Google reviews the account | Usually none, unless Google asks for information. Can last up to 35 days. |
| Bank information request | Google's bank or an intermediary bank must confirm your details | Reply to the email from the Google alias within 5 business days, with the documents requested |

The 20th-of-month cutoff
Timing decides whether a fix gets you paid this month or next:
- Hold removals and payment-info changes must be completed on or before the 20th.
- On the 20th, your balance must also meet the payment threshold.
- Payments are issued between the 21st and 26th.
- Anything fixed after the 20th takes effect the following month. The balance isn't lost, it rolls over.
So if you see a tax or PIN hold on the 18th, fix it that day. Fix it on the 22nd and you wait about a month.
Example: the same hold, fixed two days apart
| Scenario | Hold cleared | Paid in |
|---|---|---|
| Creator A | Tax form approved on May 18 | May's run (issued May 21–26) |
| Creator B | Tax form approved on May 22 | June's run (issued June 21–26) |
Both creators had identical balances. Creator B lost a month only because of the date, and if a tax form is missing, withholding can also apply to everything earned in the meantime.
Can I speed up a held payment?
Not beyond the monthly cycle. Google has no "pay me now" option. What you can do is clear the cause early and make sure nothing else is blocking the 20th-of-month check:
- Holds you control (tax, identity, PIN, payment method, self-hold): fix them as soon as the alert appears, not near the deadline.
- Holds Google controls (compliance investigation, protection): reply to any request within 5 business days, then wait. If the review has ended and the payment is still held, use the contact us option on Google's payment hold help page.
How long does an AdSense payment hold last?
| Hold | How long it lasts |
|---|---|
| Tax, identity, PIN, payment method, self-hold | Until you fix it. The next payment run after the 20th then pays you. |
| Compliance (personal info) | Until you respond. Reply within 5 business days. |
| Compliance (investigation) | Until the review ends. Lifted automatically if compliant. |
| Protection | Up to 35 days. Held funds then arrive within 5–7 days or in the next scheduled payment. |
| Invalid-traffic investigation | Payments can be delayed up to 90 days |
Why haven't I received my YouTube payment?
If there's no hold alert and the payment shows as issued, the problem is usually in transit or at your bank.
- Check how long it's been. After the 21st–26th issue date, EFT takes up to 7 business days, wire transfer up to 15 business days, and a mailed check 2–4 weeks.
- Check whether the 21st fell on a weekend or holiday. Issue can slip to the next business day.
- Check whether you met the threshold in the right account. If you earn from website AdSense too, YouTube earnings sit in a separate payments account, and each must reach the threshold on its own. A combined total above the threshold doesn't count.
- Check for a returned payment. If the bank rejected it, the Payments page shows it. Confirm the account details with your bank, add the corrected method as primary, and remove the old one.
Invalid-traffic holds: why payment can be delayed 90 days
When YouTube investigates invalid traffic (views or clicks that don't come from real, interested viewers), payments can be delayed up to 90 days. Earnings found to be invalid can be withheld, adjusted, or offset against your future balance. Editing, deleting or unlisting videos does not recover those earnings. What to do while ads are limited is covered in YouTube invalid traffic ad limit.
What not to do while a payment is on hold
| Action | Why it backfires |
|---|---|
| Opening a second AdSense account | Only one account per payee name is allowed. The duplicate is disapproved and monetization switches off. |
| Changing your payment country | Can erase payment history in the old profile, and doesn't remove the hold |
| Deleting or unlisting videos | Doesn't release held or invalid-traffic earnings |
| Ignoring a Google Payments email | Compliance and bank requests expect a reply within 5 business days |
| Buying views to "make up" lost revenue | Invalid traffic can lead to a disabled account |
FAQ
Will I lose my earnings while a payment is on hold?
Not because of the hold itself. A hold delays payment, and the balance rolls over to the next payment run once the hold is cleared. The exceptions are earnings found to be invalid traffic, which can be withheld or adjusted, and periods when monetization was paused, which earn nothing.
Does a payment hold affect my channel's monetization?
Most holds only stop payouts. Ads keep running and earnings keep accruing. A hold that comes from an unverified address can go further: if the PIN isn't entered within four months of being generated, monetization is paused until it is.
Who do I contact if the hold doesn't clear?
Start with the alert itself, since most include the exact action. For compliance and bank requests, reply to the email from Google Payments. If you've done everything and the payment is still held after a review ended, use the contact us option on Google's payment hold help page.
