How to Link AdSense to YouTube: Setup, Approval Time & Common Errors

The exact YouTube Studio steps to link a new or existing AdSense account, how long approval takes, the under-18 rule, and how to clear the errors that block linking.

Linking an AdSense for YouTube account from the YouTube Studio Earn tab

You can only earn from an approved Partner Program channel once an approved AdSense for YouTube account is linked to it. Until then, monetization stays off. The link is made inside YouTube Studio, not on the AdSense website. Starting at adsense.com is the most common reason creators get stuck being asked for a "website URL" they don't have.

Before you start:

  • Your channel has been accepted into the YouTube Partner Program.
  • You know which Google account you will use. If you already earn from website AdSense, use that same Google account.
  • Your legal name and address are ready exactly as they will appear on payments.

Which Google account should you use for AdSense?

Google allows one AdSense or AdSense for YouTube account per payee name. If you already have AdSense for a website, sign in with the Google account that owns it, even if it differs from your YouTube login. A second application under the same name is disapproved, and monetization is turned off for the channel tied to it.

For a channel on a Brand Account, the Google account that created the channel is usually the one that can complete the steps without errors.

How to link a new AdSense account to YouTube

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Earn in the left menu.
  2. On the Sign up for AdSense for YouTube card, click Start.
  3. Re-enter your YouTube password if asked.
  4. Choose the Google account to use for AdSense. If the email at the top of the page is wrong, click Use a different account.
  5. Enter your contact information as the legal payee (name and address).
  6. Submit the application. YouTube shows a confirmation that it was received.

How to link an existing AdSense account to YouTube

  1. In YouTube Studio > Earn, click Start on the AdSense card.
  2. Re-authenticate, then sign in with the Google account that owns your existing AdSense account.
  3. Check the email address shown, then click Accept Association.
  4. You return to the Earn page, and a green Done marks the step complete.

How long does AdSense approval take for YouTube?

Google says approval of a new AdSense for YouTube account can take up to several days, and new accounts can take two to three weeks. You're told by email once it's approved, and the AdSense card on the Earn page then shows the account as approved and active.

Why is my AdSense for YouTube still pending?

While an application is pending, there's nothing to fix. Waiting is normal for the first couple of weeks. Things worth checking:

  • The approval email went to the address on the AdSense account, which may not be your YouTube email.
  • You applied from YouTube Studio, not from adsense.com.
  • You don't have an older AdSense account under the same name. If you do, the new one will be disapproved (see errors below).

Can I use my website AdSense account for YouTube?

Yes. When YouTube Studio asks which Google account to use, sign in with the one that owns your existing AdSense account. That keeps you within the one-account-per-payee rule. Two things still stay separate:

What's sharedWhat stays separate
Your Google login, payee name and addressYour YouTube payments balance. It has its own payment threshold.
Your identity as one payeePayment history for YouTube vs website earnings
Your account settingsTax and payment settings for the YouTube payments account, which you should check separately

In practice, check the YouTube payments account's tax info and payment method separately after linking. If you also earn from a website, a combined total over $100 doesn't trigger a payment: each account has to reach the threshold on its own.

Can you get AdSense for YouTube under 18?

No. The minimum age is 18. Creators under 18 can only monetize by linking their channel to an approved AdSense for YouTube account held by a parent or guardian who is over 18.

If an application was disapproved for age:

  • The channel stays linked to the disapproved application.
  • If you are actually over 18, follow the disapproval email's instructions to verify your age, then resubmit.
  • If you are under 18, link the parent or guardian's approved account instead.

Payments, tax forms and identity checks then all happen in the guardian's name, since they are the account holder.

Linking AdSense for Content Manager and MCN channels

Content Manager administrators link the account from Content Manager rather than from the Earn tab:

  1. Open Settings, then Overview.
  2. Find AdSense for YouTube and click Edit, then Continue.
  3. Sign in with the Google account that owns the AdSense account and click Accept Association.

Channels in a multi-channel network (MCN) must link their own AdSense for YouTube account. Using a third party's account, even with their permission, breaks Google's terms, and the payee on the account has to be you.

What happens after you link AdSense

Linking starts monetization, but payment needs a few more steps:

  1. Earnings accrue from the date the association completes.
  2. Address verification: Google mails a PIN to your payment address. If you linked an existing account, allow at least three weeks for it to arrive. You have four months to enter it, or monetization is paused. If it doesn't arrive, see AdSense PIN not received.
  3. Payment method: once your earnings pass the selection threshold, add a bank account or another method.
  4. Tax info: submit your US tax form so you aren't withheld at the maximum rate.

Each of these steps is covered in our complete AdSense for YouTube guide.

Do I need AdSense before I apply to the Partner Program?

No. Linking an approved AdSense for YouTube account is part of getting monetized: you complete it from the Earn tab as you join, and you must keep an active account linked to stay eligible. You don't need a website AdSense account first.

Can I change the AdSense account later?

Yes, once every 32 days, from the same Earn tab. That process, and running several channels from one account, is covered in changing or sharing your AdSense for YouTube account. If you are moving country rather than switching accounts, read changing your AdSense country for YouTube first, because it affects your payment history.

Based on Google's published process. Menu names in YouTube Studio change occasionally; the steps above match YouTube Help as of the review date.
