What Happens When You Block Someone on Snapchat? Chats, Saved Snaps and Signs

Blocking stops Snaps, Chats and Story views, but not public posts or shared groups, and saved Chats may disappear. What changes on both sides, and how to tell if you've been blocked.

What happens when you block someone on Snapchat: chats, saved Snaps and Story access

Reviewed by Ihtsham Akram · Facts checked against Snapchat Support on October 28, 2026

When you block someone on Snapchat, they can no longer send you Snaps or Chats, see your Stories or Charms, or see you on Snap Map. They aren't notified. But blocking isn't total: they can still see anything you post publicly, you can still see each other in shared group chats, and saved Chats with them may be deleted.

Want to keep anything from that chat? Save or screenshot it before you block. Afterwards the chat disappears from your view.

What happens when you block someone on Snapchat?

Can send you Snaps or Chats❌ No
Can see your Stories or Charms❌ No

Get a notification that you blocked them❌ No
Can see your public content (Public Stories, Spotlight)✅ Yes
Can see your messages in a group chat you're both in✅ Yes
Can add you to new group chats or message you privately❌ No

If I block someone on Snapchat, will saved pictures and Chats go away?

They might. Snapchat says saved messages may be removed when you're no longer friends, including when you've blocked each other. Two more things to know:

  • Once you block someone, that chat disappears from your view, so you can't save or delete messages in it anymore.
  • If you unblock them later, you may not see all of your previous Chat history.

Snapchat's wording is "may be removed", not "will be", but treat anything in that chat as at risk. Photos you saved to Memories or your Camera Roll are stored separately from the chat.

Block vs remove friend vs mute

ActionWhat it doesThey can still…
BlockStops all private contact both waysSee your public posts and group messages
Remove friendTakes them off your Friends listSee public content, depending on your privacy settings
MuteStops their Stories auto-appearing at the top and silences their Chat or call notificationsMessage you and see your Stories as normal, and they aren't told

Pick block for anyone harassing or pressuring you. Remove or mute are softer options if you just want distance.

How to tell if someone blocked you on Snapchat

Snapchat doesn't notify you when you're blocked. Snapchat says a blocked person may notice that they can't view the other person's profile or contact them. Signs to look for:

  • You can't open their profile or send them a Snap or Chat.
  • Their Stories stop appearing for you.
  • You can still see them in a group chat you share.

These are signs, not proof. Similar things happen if someone removed you as a friend, changed their privacy settings, or deleted their account. A grey "pending" icon usually means you aren't friends (any more), which isn't the same as being blocked. Our Snapchat Symbols & Slang Decoder explains what each chat icon means.

How to unblock someone on Snapchat

  1. Tap your profile icon at the top of the screen.
  2. Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
  3. Scroll down and tap Blocked.
  4. Tap the ✖️ next to their name.

Once unblocked, they can send you Snaps and Chats and see your Stories and Charms again. Your old chat history may not all come back.

How to turn off mutual friends on Snapchat

Snapchat only shows a mutual friends list if both people have mutual friends sharing switched on. To turn yours off:

  • Option 1: open My Account, tap the edit icon, and switch off Show Mutual Friends List.
  • Option 2: go to Settings > My Privacy & Data > Mutual Friends and switch it off.

Turning it off hides your mutual friends list from others.

FAQ

Does Snapchat tell someone when you block them?

No. Snapchat doesn't send a notification, although they may notice they can't see your profile or contact you.

If I block someone, can they still see my Story?

Not your regular Story. They can still see anything you post publicly, such as Public Stories or Spotlight.

Can someone I blocked see my messages in a group?

Yes. Blocking doesn't remove either of you from a shared group, so you still see each other's messages there. Leave the group if you'd rather not.

Does blocking someone affect our Snapchat Streak?

Yes. You can't send each other Snaps while one of you is blocked, so the Streak can't continue. See Snapchat Streak Restore for how restores work.
